MEETINGS

Meetings may be held either in the library or in private houses. Full ordinary meetings would normally be held on the library premises. At the moment this means on either Tuesday or Fridays during ordinary opening hours. Until an agreement is reached with all the members of the partnership : the Newcastle City Council via the Library Service(1) , Newcastle College (2), and the Friends of High Heaton Library(3) , the opening hours will channel all meetings during the two days available when the library has not been pre-booked for scheduled summer time activities.

Sometimes meetings may be held elsewhere (such as rooms at Newcastle City Library). On these occasions the Friends will be represented by Lewis Moncrieff - ChairFOHHL , Cynthia Campbell - TreasurerFOHHL, Angela Mackenzie - Vice ChairFOHHL, James Mackenzie - Secretary FOHHL.
I will try to keep this website up to date and report to the fuller community of the Friends by email. - Jim Mackenzie as well.
My skills in this area are rudimentary and so I hope you will all be patient.

I have been a regular user of High Heaton library since its refurbishment. When my children were tiny babies, the library was my refuge. A short walk from house, it provided somewhere to go that was free and easily accessible. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful, and have come to know the names of my children and the types of books they like to read. We have attended baby groups, craft activities and borrowed countless titles. Without the library we would not have been able to keep up with my daughter’s insatiable appetite for reading. A love of books the library played a large part in creating.
The building is light, warm, and welcoming. it is a social hub, a happy place to spend a rainy day. It is a centre for our community.

I grew up in Cochrane Park and joined High Heaton Library when I was 5. That was in 1958 when it was made out of wood! I walked there and back every Saturday morning. I loved everything about that library. Not just the books either….the librarian’s hand-held date stamper fascinated me.. How I wanted one of those!
I go to High Heaton Library because as a disabled person I can always park nearby and as a bonus there is also a disabled toilet. Also the liabrary is compact so I dont need to walk a long way when inside. It is always nice and clean and tidy and warm. As an older disabled person I would find it impossible to carry books to and from the city library so would have to rely on others to go for me which is not the same. I also have to get books for my housebound mother which means I have to carry a lot at one time.
